Running Head: Bottlenecks in a Process

Bottlenecks in a Process

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the process flowchart from week one and to identify any main bottleneck in the process.

Bottlenecks

Upon completion of mapping the process of driving to work every day, the author found that a very simple task in actuarial can be a complex process. During a 45-minute commute to work there are other factors to take into consideration such as lane changes, traffic negotiation, intersection maneuvers, and unexpected encounters.

The driver enters the car, opens the garage door, puts on the seatbelt, turns on the vehicle, and backs safely out of the driveway. The driver leaves the house and turn right onto New Hope Road. She continues straight for a half mile and turns left onto Sugarloaf Parkway. On Sugarloaf, the driver continues straight for a three miles then exit right on the Highway 316. She takes that for about 10 miles and then exits on Pleasant Hill Road. The driver keeps straight for about 30 minutes then turns right into the parking lot on the second level of the parking lot.

The main bottleneck is making the decision of determining if the traffic is clear. Within this process the driver has to determine factors such as speed of oncoming traffic. The process flow chart is drawn as a continuous process with no inputs. A bottleneck will occur if a production capacity for one process is greater than the production capacity of a process that follows (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano 2006).

The process flow chart of commuting to work outlines the driver from beginning to end and if the car starts successfully, the processes should have the same level of capacity. The bottleneck occurs after the point of getting started.

In conclusion, the driver flow time is 45 minutes in the cycle time of one day.

In analyzing the process, the bottleneck is determining if the traffic is clear and that...
