Exercise 3

a) Assume you want to know how gender, age and BMI affect the consumption of vegetables and also how these variables affect fruit consumption. Provide tables with the estimates, discuss the results and compare the results for both equations.

There are three variables that we need to talk about, which fall under two main categories, being statistically significant and insignificant. Talking of statistically significant variables to consumption of fruit we would need to mention gender and age. In regards to the significance of sex variable, it accounts to 10% level, while age to 1%. BMI variable on the other hand can be said to be statistically insignificant. Fruit consumption of women is by 0.237 greater than that of men when examining age and BMI. On the other hand, fruit consumption increases from year to year by 0.025 as age increases.

Having analysed the estimates and results for vegetables equation, we can claim that such variables as gender, age and BMI are insignificant to its consumption.

b) The “5 a day” campaign looks at consumption of both vegetables and fruits. You now want to examine how total consumption of fruits and vegetables is explained by gender, sex and BMI. How do your results change?

In this case, it is also worth to mention that two of our variables such as gender and age are observed to be statistically significant in regard to the total consumption of both fruits and vegetables. In other words, significance level of a gender variable is equal to 5%, while age’s level coincides with 1%. BMI variable on the other hand can be said to be statistically insignificant. When talking about the total consumption of fruits and vegetables, we can observe some changes in our results. So, it can be clearly seen that this proportion of females is by 0.365 greater than that of male gender when examining age and BMI. Additionally, taking into consideration sex and BMI variables, it can be noticed that total consumption...
