No Child Left Behind: The Damaging Effect on Our Education System

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) is a modern day version of the incarnation of President Lyndon Johnson’s Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), whose purpose was to raise achievement and to close educational gaps. The NEA supports many of the goals and is working to give all children in public schools a great education. Educators know that NCLB as currently written can’t get us there (No Child Left Behind Act NCLB| ESEA).

When asked there is no parent who does not want to see their children succeed in school. With the No Child Left Behind Act fewer parents are able to see their student achieve. Children along with their parents and educators are becoming increasingly frustrated with high standards that are being implemented by this Act. The primary goals that were being set by the NCLB were all students will achieve high academic standards by attaining proficiency or better in reading and mathematics by the 2013–2014 school year. They also felt that they would be able to hire highly qualified teachers and that they would be available to all students. They also wanted to focus on the educational goals of Hispanic children within the school system making sure that students with limited English would be able to become proficient students in English (Yell, 2010). No child should have to be left behind in school and required to complete course work and learning material that is not appropriate for their grade level. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act was originally designed to remedy the situation of poor performing schools and improve children’s reading and math scores but it has done nothing but the total opposite.
