MICROBIOLOGY QUESTIONS
1. Differentiate between bacterial infection and intoxication; give an example for each.
A bacterial infection is when a bacteria directly enters into the host’s gastrointestinal tract,
attaches itself to it, and then multiplies. On the other hand, bacterial intoxication refers to when a
bacteria indirectly enters the digestive tract when its toxins contaminate food or water ingested
by the host.
2. Describe rotavirus infections; include prevalence, transmission, symptoms, and
treatment.
Rotavirus infection is a viral infection that causes an inflammation of the intestines. It is
characterized by fever, severe diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. Rotavirus is one of the most
common causes of diarrhea in children caused by infections. It is transmitted through
contaminated food and water. Rotavirus has to run its cause, so the best way to treat an infected
is to ensure they are well hydrated due to the loss of water from vomiting and diarrhea.
3. Discuss giardiasis; include causative agent, transmission, symptoms, and treatment.
Giardiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the microscopic parasite and protozoan Giardia. It
is gotten from contaminated food and water, and it is transmitted from person to person through
contact with an infected person. Symptoms of the infection include tiredness, diarrhea, nausea,
vomiting excessive gas, and abdominal pain. Medications mostly used to treat giardiasis include
antibiotics such as metronidazole, tinidazole, paromomycin, and nitazoxanide
4. Compare and contrast bacterial and viral meningitis.
Meningitis is a condition whereby the membranes protecting the brain and spinal cord become
inflamed because they have been infected. There are three types of meningitis, bacterial
meningitis, viral meningitis, and fungal meningitis. Below are a few comparison between
bacterial and viral meningitis:
