It has been said that change is the only guarantee in life; the sooner you embrace it the better off you will be. Technology has impacted the way in which communication takes place, both at home and at work, and it is a constant dance to manage technology in conjunction with daily interactions and activities.
Communication in a Technology Age
Many people believe that technology has helped to advance their communication skills and get them expressed faster, but others will say the opposite. With how quickly lives move there is a need to communicate just as speedily; however, it is more difficult than anticipated and begs the question if the intended message will even be understood. According to Quinn (2014), “Technological advances continue to support ease, speed, and access regarding communication. Unfortunately, ease, speed, and access do not ensure that intended messages are fully heard and properly interpreted” (p. 6). Written communication, whether in text, e-mail, social media or otherwise is appealing, particularly to introverts, but prevents genuine, open communication and dialogue (Quinn, 2014, p. 8). Depending on comfort level one may tell themselves that sending an e-mail is the easiest way to communicate with someone, while in reality picking up the phone could be just as fast and provides additional benefits such as fostering a connection and helping to prevent misunderstandings.
Not too long ago technology supported the surge for electronic invitations, which were previously mailed in a formal manner. This is an example of technology greatly impacting what is believed to be acceptable communication and can grow further complicated when you add generational and cultural differences into the mix.
