2. The trachea extends from the larynx and branches into the two primary bronchi. At the top of the trachea the cricoid cartilage attaches it to the larynx. This is the only complete ring, the others being incomplete rings of reinforcing cartilage. The trachealis muscle joins the ends of the rings and these are joined vertically by bands of fibrous connective tissue, the annular ligaments of trachea. The epiglottis closes the opening to the larynx during swallowing.
Each bronchus contains cartilage, a mucosal lining, and smooth muscle. Cartilage is a connective tissue that provides support for physical processes, and in this case, it prevents the collapsing of the bronchi during inhalation and exhalation. This is important, since air conduction involves pressure and can damage soft tissue if not protected. The mucosal lining produces mucous, which is a thick, semi-liquid substance designed to trap foreign particles from entering the lungs. Smooth muscle is also found in each bronchus. It is muscle that is involuntarily controlled, which means you can't control it yourself. Your body determines whether this smooth muscle contracts or relaxes based on whether or not more or less airflow is needed. The bronchioles are smaller in size with less connective tissue.
Th bronchioles are more likely to collapse because they have less cartilage that keeps them open.
3. Airflow is restricted during an asthmatic because of the restriction of airflow on the trachea.
Wheezing is usually worse when asthmatics exhale because when you exhale, pressure increases in the lungs to cause exhalation. This further constricts the bronchioles, making it harder to exhale. The pressure decreases again for inhalation, relieving the bronchioles and making it easier for the air to flow again. This is why wheezing is usually worse during exhalation.
