“For years, Target has cultivated an image of itself as the ‘anti-Wal-Mart,’ a retailer that refuses to sacrifice workplace standards in the pursuit of higher sales and stock prices. But now, after a decade of meteoric growth at both Target and Wal-Mart, labor groups say the two retailers are no longer very different in the way they treat their workers” (Reclaimed 2010). It has been a long slated debate about the unjust treatment and wages that Wal-Mart offers to its employers. The Walmart empire has only continued to grow and most say it has become a self-indulged, snowball of unjust treatment that survives and continues to expand at any cost. However a large part of its success stems from cutthroat business management and keeping one goal in mind, to be the biggest and best.

“Entry-level hourly workers in Target stores earn roughly the same pay and have more difficulty qualifying for health care coverage than their peers at Wal-Mart. Both retailers oppose unions and have taken steps to prevent organizing efforts in stores. And both have outsourced jobs overseas to save costs” (Reclaimed 2010). However, It is key to not here that even though lately both chains are doing basically the same thing, Wal-Mart has a way worse name for itself. In certain cities like NYC, and Chicago for example, Wal-Mart has had a very bad integration and the communities flat out refuse them, whilst Target is accepted and welcomed. This reputation though false, has been only beneficial for target and making things easier for them as they expand across the nation.

The main thing to focus in on here is that Wal-Mart and Target are essentially doing the same things, even if Target is perceived to be better or has a better image and advertising strategy. However, the focus is Wal-Mart, being the leading retailer in th enation, until they stop there unfair r treatment and powerhouse unfair strategies and tactics, why would anyone else change? How could they possibly in the same market...
