REPORT DESCRIPTION

Elemental analysis is a process of detection and quantification of elemental compounds, molecular species

and elements. This analysis technique is a part of analytical chemistry and can be qualitative and

quantitative in nature. Sample types tested for trace elements comprises of aqueous, non-aqueous,

organic and non-organic materials. For organic chemists, elemental analysis refers to CHNX analysis, which

is used to determine the purity and structure of a compound. In this technique, a sample is burnt in excess

of oxygen and thereby collecting combustion products like carbon dioxide, nitric acid and water. The

masses of these products are used to determine composition of the sample. Ultra trace analysis and

elemental trace analysis detection range from parts per million (ppm), to parts per billion (ppb) and parts

per trillion (ppt) levels, using updated techniques and instruments. Some of the major technologies used

for elemental analysis include inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma

optical emission spectrometry, X-ray Fluorescence and X-ray Diffraction among others.
