According to the ethical theory of utilitarianism, a deed is deemed ethically right if it benefits the maximum number of populace with the greatest good. An action can be established to be ethically right or not by calculating the quantity of suffering or contentment the said deed inflicts. To be deemed ethically right, the said deed must cause the most contentment to a larger number or the least suffering to a lesser number of populations (Mill, 2010). Utilitarianism lays emphasis on the significances of the considered deed as opposed to the consequences of following a more general rule. Contentment and suffering are the most believed relevant consequences, as such, pleasure is deemed intrinsically valuable whereas suffering is considered intrinsically not valuable. Utilitarian believe that, in any particular situation, an act is deem ethically appropriate if it maximizes the interests of those affected.
