When you look at socialization you are looking how people interact and the behaviors to which they behave. As an individual you will develop “skills” that help you become “social.” A very important part of socialization comes from the family. Socialization starts from a very young age (infants) and the process in which we learn comes from family, school peer groups and mass media (Marcionis, 2013).

There have been different researchers throughout history that have made great contributions in helping us understand human development. The works of Freud, Piaget, Kohlberg, Gilligan, Mead and Erikson all stand out. As we look at the assignment “You Decided” titled “Boys will be Boys”. The works of these Sociologists will help us understand more about why these students behaved in the fashion that they did.

First let’s look at the problem. I overhear a conversation of two of my male coworkers; although I only hear certain bits and pieces, I determine that these two are acting inappropriately for the work place, mostly dealing in sexual references, jokes, and sharing graphic images. I decide to seek advice from others. The Manager of Student Employees comments that “boys will be boys” and that as long as it’s kept to them, it can be ignored. It is possible that manager of student employees is judging the situation “with an eye toward personal relationships and loyalties” (Marcionis, 2013 pg. 69) according to theorists Carol Gilligan. I however disagree with this. The reason is that when you look characteristics of bureaucracy outline by Max Weber; “purposely impersonal” rule applies here. All employees and customers are treated equal. Telling sexual jokes, sharing images is not an acceptable behavior in the workforce. This type of behavior...
