Leadership Styles

A leader is a person who leads others. A leader is put in place to share a vision, drive others, show commitment, and use the skills and expertise to lead others to a common goal. Leaders also see problems that need to be fixed or a series of goals that need to be achieved in order to succeed. Leaders need to have certain traits some people are born with these traits while others develop the traits over time (Yukl, 2013). Leaders are inspiring and one particularly has inspired me to be a better leader.

Granger Cobb is the leader of Emeritus Senior Living Corporation in Seattle, Washington. He is the type of leader who has a great personality, motivated to the right thing morally. He has integrity, confidence, and many years of experience and knowledge with skills and expertise in the senior living field. The skills that he possesses are great planning skills, he is the type of leader that when something is planned he motivates and communicates to each person to make sure are all working towards the same goal. Granger Cobb refuses to let anyone get in the way of another his goals for the corporations. He is polite but persistent, constant but focused and wants his team to stay focused as well to assure that all seniors are “safely somewhere.”

Granger Cobb is a transformational leader and I see myself like him in many ways. He is a role model and many others including myself look up to him. I have been an Executive Director for over 10 years with Emeritus and I have followed his leadership. I manage my teams by leading them rather than managing them so they to make a difference and positive impact daily. Granger is full of confidence in his decisions and its from him that I have learned to have confidence in my decisions as well as take risks as long as it is for the greater good of the company.
