Abstract
Computers play a major part in our lives today from educational institutions to business productivity. We can find some type computer just about anywhere. It’s now a part of our society’s identity. An essential part that lies in the heart of all computers is motherboards or system boards. The motherboard sets the foundation for the overall computer performance. Some of the best performing computers are equipped with higher-end motherboards. Motherboards also vary greatly in shape and size.
The purpose of this paper is to give a history of motherboards and how they have evolved over the years. I will discuss the major motherboard form factors or sizes found today and their purpose. There are over 40 different types of motherboards that were developed since 1983. Most of these are proprietary motherboards or system boards, which I will briefly discuss.
I will mainly speak about the commonly used Advanced Technology Extended or ATX form factor and its variants. I will go over the different areas found on the motherboard and their functions. I hope that this paper will give you a good understanding of the evolution of the motherboard and why it is an essential part of the computer. I will also explain how this topic applies to my biblical worldview.
