Abstract

This paper will review the structure and makeup of single parent households. The single parent household may consist of a single mother, single father, and grandparent as parent. It reviews family income. How it affects the family and the child/ren. The decisions that the parent makes, and coming from a single parent household may have a major effect on the child and the family structure as a whole. Understanding some of the issues that a single family household may face may help in understanding some of the things they go through. If the parent is involved with their child/ren this may reduce negative behavior. This may be a difficult task due to the single parent having to work long hours to provide for the family. In this paper I will review the makeup of a single parent household and what it may look like. This paper addresses the suggestions of different theories and findings to the issues in single parent families and how they may be a successful unit. Single parent families are continuing to rise, whether by choice or not. Society should be able to provide resources necessary to these families that they may experience success. The resource doesn’t have to be handouts, but information and placing them in the right direction so they may experience the American dream. Isn’t that what every family is striving for? To live out the American dream and have a happy and successful family.
