‘Once We Identify Ourselves We Actually Lose Who We Are’

Identity is a complex construct that is your own to create and change. The impact of others however, controls the formation of one’s self the majority of your life. Being a part of a group does not mean we automatically lose ourselves. In order to grow as a person, membership of a group is essential; it can enhance your sense of self by enabling individuals to bond and develop together. The influential nature of a group can bring out positive changes that can help develop your true self, it enables a person to recognize their true desires.

We often categorize ourselves in terms of other people and groups. Some people put a greater emphasis on group identity. In effect, their sense of identity is created through taking a part of everyone with who they bond and adding it to their own sense of self. In this way, our self becomes a complex, multiple, social being. If we lost our job, it would not just be the loss of money that hurt us, but also the loss of relationships and feelings of being outside the company with which we have identified ourselves for so long. The people we identify ourselves with play an important role in who we are. However, the fear of rejection from the groups with which we identify is a powerful force and just the thought of this is enough to discourage many people from ever taking their creative ability and sharing it with the world.

Belonging to something greater than ourselves can allow a person to be aware of their behaviours. Throughout a person’s life it is their desire to have belonging. It’s instinctual. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs states that individuals need to feel as though they are a part of something before they can be completely aware of their own identity. Not fulfilling their basic human needs for love and belonging can destroy one’s motivation to strive to achieve their other human needs. The need for love falls under esteem and above safety.
