In this newspaper article, the companies in Singapore are asking the Singapore Government to give more incentives if the Singapore Government is to implement paternity leave.

In Singapore, the women enjoy equal rights and are given equal opportunities as their male counterparts. Therefore, it is common to see an equal number of male and female employees in corporations. This is why many people choose to marry later at above 30 years old as they emphasize more on their career (as seen by working too long hours) rather than on family. Furthermore, the current Government policies allow women to take maternity leave before and after their child birth so as to take care of the child. However, men do not contribute as much as the women in taking care of the children.

In the modern Singapore society, it is stated that women and men go through a meritocracy system which rewards those who work hard and there is gender equality. However, this is not the case, as the patriarchy system is still practiced in our society. This is shown by many males dominating the corporations and politics and also being the head of their families, and few women made it to the top, as stated under the Feminist theory. However, the Singapore Government is trying to change that system in families allow men to help their wives in taking care of their children, especially after the child is born. This will also better ensure that there is more equality between the males and females, reducing the possibilities of having gender conflict as stated in the conflict Theory.

Under the functionalism theory, we see family as the basic form of population in the society. Having more families and hence babies in Singapore will allow them to serve their functions in the society. With more babies, we can be sure that the new generation can carry on the reproduction so that we will not ‘die out’ in the society.
