The Great Monroe

Marilyn Monroe was not only know as a pretty face, she was recognized for her many talents, which included singing, modeling and acting. She personified the word Hollywood glamour. In the 20th century, Marilyn was the most famous woman around. From her movies, singing and personal life, she was known all across the world as the Blonde Bombshell. To many fans and admirers across the world, Marilyn Monroe remains an icon today.

Marilyn Monroe also known as Norma Jeane Baker, was born on June 1, 1926 in Los

Angeles, California, to Gladys Baker. Though she did not know her father, her mother was a film cutter at RKM studios. Norma Jeane Baker was raised in California, but spent most of her childhood in foster homes and orphanages until 1937 because her mother was placed in a mental institution. As a child, Norma Jean spent most of her life jumping from home to home when she was only eight. Finally in 1937 she went to live with a family friend by the name of Grace McKee Goddard. When the star was 16, the Goddard’s had to move to the east coast and could not afford to take Norma Jean with them. She was left with a decision to either move back into a foster home or be married.

Living most of her life in the foster homes she decided to marry Jimmy Dougherty on June 19, 1942. Jimmy was a 20 year old boy she was dating for six months. Jimmy decided to join the Marines, which he was shipped off to the south pacific in 1944. While Jimmy was away, Norma Jean took a job at the Radio Plane Munitions, in Burbank, California, as an assembler. As Norma Jean was working at this job she was photographed by David Conover. Mr. Conover was taking pictures of the woman for Yank Magazine, in efforts to support the war. He could not believe his eyes when he seen Norma Jean. In his eyes, she was every photographers dream.
