Module 2
1. What is potential energy?
a. Potential energy is energy stored in an object because of its size, shape and or state. In its stored shape, it has the potential to do work. The chemical energy in fuels is potential energy.
2. Give some examples of different types of:
b. potential energy-fossil fuels.
c. electrical potential energy- a battery
d. chemical potential energy- food we eat
e. gravitational potential energy- a boulder on a hill
3. What factors affect the amount of gravitational potential energy?
f. Size of the object, how high the object is
4. Explain what happens to kinetic energy when the mass and speed of an object changes.
g. A car moving at 10mph’s kenetic energy is half that of a car twice its weight also moving at 10 mph. Kenetic energy in terms of speed is speed(squared). If you double the speed, you increase the kinetic energy by 4, and three times as fast by 9.
5. List examples of different types of kinetic energy.
h. A rock on a hill, a pendulum, a car, a rollercoaster
6. Define thermal energy.
i. Thermal energy is energy that can be obtained by the sun. Solar panels harvesting the suns energy is an example.
7. Explain the law of conservation of energy.
j. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Work input equals work output. If work is not being done to an object, work cannot be done by the object. In the absence of external work on an object, the energy remains unchanged.
8. What is gravitational force?
k. (mass1xmass2)/distance.
9. Explain what happens to the gravitational force when there is a change in mass and/or distance.
l. A change in mass increases its gravitational force. If both objects are doubled in mass, then the force is multiplied by 4. If distance is increased, gravitational force decreases; and if distance decreases, gravitational force is increased.
10. Use an example to explain the...
