Introduction

In the modern criminal justice the need for rehabilitation has overridden the previous emphasis on punishment. It is estimated that rehabilitation programs reduce recidivism in the range of one third and a quarter (Samaha, 2005, p.500). Criminal justice has for a long time experienced setbacks due to lack of resources, and lack of programs to rehabilitate criminals. In modern age the program is facing new challenges due to high level of crime, and juvenile delinquency. The types of rehabilitation programs which are effective are subject to discussion and are a main concern. This paper analyzes rehabilitation programs that are used in criminal justice, the strengths and the future development of specific programs.

Most of the programs used in corrections institutions are costly hence the need for proper allocation and provide the desired results. Effective programs should aid the inmates to recognize their faults, empower them to have an attitude change, and influence them to make amends in their behavior in the future. The programs should be customized to the various levels of inmates in corrections institutions depending on the crime committed, if they are ex inmates or first time offenders and ages of the offenders. Example the rehabilitation programs developed for men do not meet the needs of female inmates (Samaha, 2005, p.505).

Thesis statement: some rehabilitation programs in corrections do not work or their effectiveness is very low. There are various types of rehabilitation programs some being more suitable to specific offenders and should not be used collectively to all inmates.
