Two Examples for an Introduction:
As a decade remembered for its picturesque lifestyle, the 1950s offered great promise and hope for the American society. In the movie Mona Lisa Smile, one character believed in the dream more than any others. Nancy Anderson fervidly followed the rules set by society and culture with the belief that order and control would lead her to the ultimate prize, which was the picture-perfect family and home. In an attempt to mask her loneliness, she lived a life of order: her appearance, behavior, and attitude present the pieces to a puzzle that if correctly constructed would provide her with an unspoiled, ideal mid-century life.
The painting of Mona Lisa has intrigued critics and casual art viewers alike for decades. One woman’s face has offered years of debate over concealment and happiness. This same debate takes place for each of the characters in the movie Mona Lisa Smile. While all of them present one face on the outside, there was much more at play in terms of defining their identities; either they conformed or bucked the constraints of 1950s society. The character of Nancy Anderson offered viewers a pristine image of woman on the surface while on the inside she coped with her own failure to obtain the 1950s dream of a husband and family. Her need for control, serious attitude and lack of independence demonstrate the harsh loneliness that was a reality for some women in mid-century America who found out that following all the rules was not a guarantee.
