“Mars is Heaven”
In “Mars is Heaven,” Ray Bradbury uses setting to create illusionary image in the mind of earth people when they explore Mars. Astronauts discover Mars looks similar to their hometown and the environment there is more like the planet earth. They meet their family and, relatives who had already died. Later they discover it is the trick of Martians to trap them by hypnosis and before they could escape themselves, Martians kill them. Bradbury has started with the voyage to Mars and has included small town, atmosphere, and dead relatives to create different sets of illusion.
The story starts with the crowd of people at Ohio field by shouting and waving their hands to the seventeen astronauts. Crowd of people is encouraging them. Besides their turning point of life, it also shows that the technology had already been introduced in Earth and the miracle of science had already started advancing. Astronauts are well equipped with the weapons to protect themselves from the attack of Martians. They go into the space to mars. Mars is a new world and another planet for earth people. Hence, voyage to Mars signifies the interest of exploration into the new world, and into a completely new environment with a hope to see and find new things. Along with the crowd of people, astronauts also have lots of excitement and curiosity to know and face the unknown world, how will Martians treat them, and how will they look like.
When the astronauts landed in Mars, they see a small town where Martians have established homes there.
