Let us take a look inside the city of Los Angeles, this city sits on the south side of California, where the many fault lines cause around ten thousand earthquakes a year. That’s a lot of earth shaking. How does an earthquake happen? Well according to UPSies (http://www.geo.mtu.edu/UPSeis/why.html) “Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake.” While it causes a shake to the ground it cannot be the only effect that the quake has. There are more hazards that come at risk such as destruction of buildings, loss of lives, fires, flooding, tsunamis, problems with the health systems, and more.
We now know the hazard but how about the how this all works? Earthquakes start at and epicenter which is like the median point. When you take a deeper look past the shaking of the earth and the after math, behind the scenes are scientist working round the clock to figure out where the epicenter was and if the quake is “done.” The two main causes known are; “they can be linked to explosive volcanic eruptions; they are in fact very common in areas of volcanic activity where they either proceed or accompany eruptions. Secondly, they can be triggered by Tectonic activity associated with plate margins and faults. The majority of earthquakes worldwide are of this type.“ If we know all this then why do we not stop them, because we cannot control a volcano or the plates.
As the plates will move sometimes they push the ground more in an upward motion. This type of movement is known as convergent plate movement. You may believe that the weaker plate is pushed beneath the stronger plates, but in this case the oceanic plate which is...
