Interpersonal Deception Theory

People say it is quite difficult for people to spot others deception. Interpersonal Deception Theory discusses and explains individual’s psychological and physical behavior when having a deceptive conversation with others. There are three different types of strategies, as a sender, when having a deceptive conversation. Falsification, which is a made-up story, concealment, which is telling a story, but leaving some parts out, and Equivocation, which is avoiding the situation all together. This theory explains that individual’s have to use mental effort when being deceptive. When having a deceptive exchange with another person the sender could also have some leakage. Leakage is where the sender will show nonverbal cues of their internal state, unconsciously. Most individuals feel bad about deception and are likely to show it.

When I was about 16 years old, in high school, deception came so easy to me. I would lie about everything even if I did not need to. I thought it was fun to lie to people. I never had a plan when lying to another person. I used to sneak out of my house all the time to go to parties and hang out with people I was not supposed to. Even when they caught me I would lie about where I was and they would not even think twice about it. I do not know if I was just that good of a lair or if they were just really bad at detecting a lie. When telling a lie to someone I was always looking the other person in the eye, always had a calm tone, and I never hesitated.

Even though I was a good lair my sister was not. My sister and me shared a room. One night I told my parents I was going out to eat with a friend from school and they told me I had to be back by midnight. I was never worried about curfew because my parents were always asleep when I got home. That night I was back at my house at 3am.
