Report – Week 1
MG354 – Prof. Yarbrough
I realize that since I was a child, I have always wanted to run my own business. I always dreamed of working for me – and only me. Watching my father’s real estate business boom, plummet, and further boom again, allowed understanding of the various aspects that played a part in owning one’s business. My aunt also owns a daycare, and watching hers blossom from the two-bedroom house to a multi-million dollar academy right here in Kansas City has also been fantastic. It’s made me realize that it is POSSIBLE. With a little extra sacrifice and determination, so much can happen to one’s “dream”.
As a fourth year student, I have had the opportunity to learn about marketing, management, and multiple accounting techniques. From customer service and relations to employee retention, I have been able to put together a “connection”. Understanding that employees are customers, too, is very important to the growth of one’s business. Treating someone fairly and with respect is very important on both sides of the spectrum. No one will want to work for a company that treats it customers like they don’t matter, and treats its employees the same! We all want to work for a company that makes us feel important or even just wanted. We want to work for “something” – whether that’s a goal, or other outside motivation – we all have a drive. I remember when I graduated from high school, I kept struggling with a degree choice. Up until I was halfway through my freshman year, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to follow my childhood dream of being a lawyer, or if I wanted to follow my new aspiration of owning my own company. It was when I saw the finish product of my aunt’s business that I realized EXACTLY what I wanted to do. I no longer wanted a firm of my own; that was too much. I wanted to own a plethora of businesses, all with different emphases. I love children, and education – why not childcare center? I have always wanted to...
