Finding A Way to be Free

This past semester, my class have read some many interesting themes that really expressed the three genres that we explored such as: Short Fiction, poetry, and plays. Many of these authors that we have read used man literary terms for us to understand the meaning and message of their stories. When reading these stories you can feel the author’s thoughts, ideas, and emotions, behind their stories they tell.

One of the themes that we explored this semester faced a lot about women’s rights, domination, and not having voice. When reading these stories it really captures a deep message which was very shocking and sad. The selection I made shared one theme. This was a hard choice but a great one that really spoke out to me. The stories that will capture the theme will be the short story of “Story of an Hour” and the play “Trifles”.

When reading a short story, the author uses many literary terms such as Irony, symbolism, and foreshadowing. Authors who write short stories only have a certain about time and space to express their thoughts and their ideas. Short stories is shorter and deals with few characters only concentrating on the mood rather than the plot. The setting has to be described as quickly as possible. In a play the author uses setting, climax and symbols that sends an important message to the audience.

In the short story of “Story of an Hour” it begins with the setting and introducing the main character. In the beginning of the story the authors describes Mrs. Mallards heart condition after finding out that her husband has died from a railroad accident, “She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her”.
