Technology and Society

We live in a world where technology is becoming increasingly common in the everyday lives of human beings. People rely on technology as a necessity more than as an aid to cross information or communication barriers to make their lives easier. This dependency on technology has affected society positively when it was not very advanced in the late 19th century and affects society neutrally nowadays when it is very advanced. Using electronic devices and digital platforms, society relies too much on technology. We have become highly dependent on tools other than the human brain to do or to remember to do certain things like pay the bills, send out the mail, or even take the car for an oil change. Social media has become the most common way of communicating and sharing information with people. It is the new way to socialize with friends on a global scale right from your computer or mobile device. Socializing and sharing information in the 19th century was not as easy but people did it the old fashion way, using technology that was available in that time. There is a clear connection between people and technology and how it affects them. Author Joshua Foer speaks on the need for a deeper appreciation of memory and the role of technology affecting it.

In the 19th century when technology was not so advanced, people still invented tools and machinery to make the lives of people easier. In fact, for that period of time, any inventions to do exactly that was considered a technological advancement such as the typewriter, “…invented 1868 by Americans Christopher Latham Sholes, Carlos Glidden and Samuel W. Soule” (Wiki). In his American Library Association article, author Michael Gorman testifies to that effect by saying, “Technology had been wreaking marvels in the twenty-five years before 1901”.
