THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

I. INTRODUCTION

Chalk is made from calcium carbonate, or gypsum or magnesia today. It is a fine-grained, soft limestone made of tiny shells of one-celled animals. Chalk is must softer and more porous than ordinary limestone its color is usually white gray or flesh due to the presence of other minerals.

The great need for cheaper school supplies is the reason why this project has been materialized. Since, teachers are beset with financial problems especially in providing their school needs and supplies.

There is a way out from this dilemma; it is the use of local materials such as cassava flour and plaster of Paris as alternative materials in making chalk.

Along this aforementioned, this study is conclusive for finding alternative chalk derived from local materials. The researchers experimented chalk made from cassava flour mixed with plaster of Paris that can be used as an alternative chalk while availing almost the same results as that of commercial chalks found in the market.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to utilize cassava flour and plaster of paris in making local chalk alternative to commercial chalk.

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following:

1. Do the chalk made from cassava flour and plaster of paris can be used as alternative to commercial chalk?

2. What are the measures of the three formulations of chalk in terms of the following:

a. Texture

b. Clearness of marking

c. Color

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The increasing price of school supplies and needs has become a problem to most teachers. The use of cheapest materials in making local chalk was utilized in lieu of commercial chalk in the market,
