Hispanic American Diversity.

In today’s assignment I will discuss the linguistic, political, social, economic, religion, and family conventions or statuses of four Hispanic groups living in the United States. The groups that I have chosen are, Mexican Americans, Puerto Rican Americans, Cuban Americans, and Dominican Americans. I will discuss the differences and commonalities among these groups.

The Mexican American population is the largest minority group in the United States. Mexican American heritage comes from different parts of Mexico that is why there are a wide variety of linguistic among them. For many years Spanish was the only language spoken by Mexican Americans. As Mexican American got exposed to Anglo American education, English became a fundamental part of their curriculum. The use of Spanish in and outside the classroom was strongly discouraged and sometimes prohibited. The primary language of Mexican American is English, and with each new generation born in the United States the use of Spanish became less frequent. In my cases this is true, my parents can speak Spanish but none of us kids can speak Spanish.

The average size of a Mexican American family in 1989 was 4.1 persons. Among Mexican origin families in the United States, 73.5 percent were headed by married couples and 19.1 percent were female-headed. If you ask any Hispanic women, they will say they wear the pants of the house, they would claim 99 percent is female-headed. In 1989 13.5 percent of Mexican American households received public assistance. Mexican American’s believe in La Familia or the extended family which include aunts, uncles, grandparents, and great grandparents. The relationship that started in definitive terms at his or her baptism, from this point forward they provide emotional, financial, and any other form of assistance or advice their ahijados (godchildren) might need.
