Section I: Watch the video on the iLab page about Wireshark and answer the questions below.

1. Is Wireshark open source or proprietary? What does it mean to be open source versus proprietary in the first place? Give an example of something that is open source versus something that is proprietary in the field of networking and telecommunications. (1 point)

Wireshark is an open source program, meaning anyone can use it and it is usually a free software. Propritery is a software that has restrictions on its use and its code is secret. Wireshark, CCleaner and Bitdefender are examples of open source and Windows Office and Adobe Photoshop are examples of Proprietary software.

2. What is seen in each of the three panes that display the packets seen on a local area network? (Hint: for full credit, you must talk about what is displayed in each pane in addition to the name of each pane.) (1 point)

1: (Packet list Pane) has each pane in a separate line, there are as many rows as packets in the capture pane.

2: (Treeview Pane) When you pick a line from the Packet Pane List, it shows the basic protocols encapsulated in the packet.

3: (Byteview Pane) Shows the raw data(16) or (10x) bytes per row, When you select a line in the Pane View Row the corresponding bytes are displayed.

3. What does a display filter do? Where do you add in a display filter? (1 point)

It allows you to define whih packets are displayed in the Packet List Pane, which is useful for troubleshooting networking problems.

You can add in the Filter text box bar which is located directly above the Packet List Pane

4. What does the protocol column show? How can this be helpful to you when troubleshooting? (1 point)
