Middle management comprises of managers who head specific departments, such as accounting, marketing, production, or business units. Middle management also serve as project managers in flat organizations. They are responsible for implementing the top management’s policies and plans and typically have two management levels below them. Usually middle management are among the first to be slashed in the ‘resizing’ of a firm. According to Management Quality-The Role of the Middle Manager, “Management Quality has a strong impact on customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction and the efficiency, productivity and development of the organization. The overall responsibility for management quality lies with executive management, but they often leave it to the HR function to put policy, programs and processes in place. But policy and programs must be implemented in the line organization, mainly through middle managers.”

In Joe’s Steel Corporation, Larry Haley would be the middle manager. He ensures that customers receive satisfactory service and quality steel products. Larry also is involved in purchasing, budgeting, accounting, and personnel work.

Planning involves deciding where to take a company and selecting step to get there. It first requires managers to be aware of challenges facing their businesses, and then it requires manager to forecast future business and economic conditions. They then formulate objectives to reach by certain deadlines and decide on steps to reach them. They re-evaluate their plans as conditions change and make adjustments as necessary. Planning helps allocate resources and reduce waste as well. Planning is related to the middle manager, Larry Haley, because he is involved in the budgeting for Joe’s Steel Corporation.
