Multitasking: The Instigator of ADHD

Today, our nation has learned how to multitask with everyday tasks whether people know it or not. Multitasking is something people do without realizing with new technological advancements in society. But, multitasking has not resulted in something positive. Instead, multitasking has resulted in a new brain disease that has spread rapidly; Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), just like Richard Restak talks about in his work, “Attention Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of Our Era”. People in today’s society have become more concentrated on technology and social media that they have lost focus on important tasks like school and work. Multitasking has resulted in our nation becoming what is known as “the first society with Attention Deficit disorder.” (Restak 335) ADHD has also resulted in a new drug abuse with the pill Adderall. In Whitney Malkin’s work, “ADDERALL Alert” she talks about the dangers of Adderall and the new mindset that society has on the drug. In the face of new advancements in modern technology, multitasking’s effectiveness has actually turned for the worst and resulted in our nations new epidemic; ADHD and Adderall abuse.

Today, most teens and young adults are bombarded with social media and new technology every day. Social media websites like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have led to people multitasking work and school with social media websites. In school labs and libraries teachers have locked down the internet specifically to keep students from accessing social media websites because they know that students will be on Facebook the whole time instead of doing their class assignments. Many kids don’t even realize that social media networks have resulted in the spread of ADHD. In schools today, students are writing wall posts instead of writing research papers.
