As I have studied in this class, this has helped me ground my roots into my heritage. Through the stories from my family I feel very informed and the information has stayed the same. How much more can you learn when you hear the same stories every holiday? Immigration is a “hot topic” in today’s society. Few issues polarize Americans than the influx of illegal immigrants across the country’s borders. Opponents of modern-day immigration cite concerns such as increased violence and drug trafficking and loss of American jobs to foreigners. Supporters of immigration demonstrate concern for the welfare of other human beings, realizing that in many cases the United States offers chances at survival and success not found elsewhere in the world. Regardless of one’s views regarding this topic, one cannot deny the powerful impact immigration has had on American throughout history. The challenges and opportunities associated with a culturally diverse society through immigration will likely persist well into the future, as an increasing number of individuals from foreign lands continue to populate the United States.

The Future of the U.S. Population

The United States came into existence due to the immigration of individuals from around the world. During the period between 1860 and 1920, almost 30 million foreigners immigrated to the United States. After 1880, about 700,000 new individuals took up residence in this country each year. Over the last century, changes in immigration occurred due in part to changing political and economic circumstances. By the end of World War I, immigration had almost ceased to exist.
