Chapter 1

1. Why is it important to use systems analysis and design methodologies when building a system? Why not just build the system in whatever way seems to be “quick and easy?” What value is provided by using an “engineering” approach?

It is important because you want the system to work long term. This system should meet all project needs in an appropriate manner. Poor design will lead to a system fail and rebuild in the future. This sucks up even more time and financial resources. By using system analysis and design methodologies you can ensure the end product was executed properly.

8. How might prototyping be used as part of the SDLC?

A prototype as a part of SDLC is a small scaled down model of the desired end product. It allows team members to work through issues and explore options. Once the desired layout is define the final system can be developed. This is similar to sculptor creating a 6 inch model before creating a 6 foot model.

Chapter 2

3. In the section on choosing off-the-shelf software, eight criteria are proposed for evaluating alternative packages. Suppose the choice is between alternative custom software developers rather than prewritten packages. What criteria would be appropriate to select and compare among competing bidders for custom development of an application? Define each of these criteria.

All sections should be considered in any type of software purchase.

* Cost should considered for the upfront and ongoing expenses

* Functionality is how the system may or may not solve your problem

* Vendor support is vital should you need help at any point in time

* Viability ensure you investment in software is good long term

* Flexibility is especially a concern if you have unique needs

* Documentation is a clue to the viability of your vendor and extended support

* Response time is essential when you have a need to be filled

* Ease of installation could completely stall your project especially if...
