Incident for Discussion: Broken Welds

1. There are two truths in manufacturing, the first is, if you do not produce a quality product the consumer will find another product to buy, and the second is, if the manufacturing production line is not running the company, which you depend on to support your life style, is not making money. That said, I fully understand the Chief Engineer's concerns. Alison's predicament is how many resources should she devote to this new project, She already has the green light from the Chief Engineer to use all whatever she needs to find the root cause of what is causing this defect in the welding process.

This project will not follow a normal project selection process. This is one of the high profile projects that is a "has too" not a "want too" project, the text refers to this type of project as "The Operating/ Competitive necessity Project." This project not following normal rules will still come back later and take resources form the other projects in the works. The good news is the resources usually come from projects that are not started yet instead of projects in the works. Nevertheless, just because the budget and the approval process are altered Alison's process should not; she will still need to know cost, schedule, and deliverables.

In many ways, Alison is a fortunate project manager, having a person in the company who can identify and fix the problem without hiring an outside firm or bringing on additional people that would all incur addition cost; this is a great advantage when it comes to the budget.
