Introduction

Analog Devices (ADI) is a world leader in design, manufacture and marketing of high performance analog, mixed signal and digital single processing integrated circuits used in all type of electronic equipment. Company currently produce a wide range of innovative products including date converters, amplifier, radio frequency ICs, power management products, sensor bases on microelectromechnical systems (MEMS) technology and others sensors (Analog, 2015).

Summary

The case presents how MEMS a business unit of ADI was not successful in the beginning but vision of Mr. Stata not giving up MEMS for the short term loss changed revolutionary. With the right resources, vision and direction of Mr. Stata MEMS became a great success. Case presents how MEMS while losing money when ADI was profitable and with decision of Mr. Stata keeping MEMS a business unit alive made it possible the MEMS to survive the worst development phase using ADI resources and financial support.

The case also presents the relationship between the business unit and corporate office for business growth and use of available resource. The case presents how MEMS was able to use resources of ADI to turn around its business and became a success story and how growth of MEMS is expanding ADI. Case also showed how dynamic relationship of business unit and corporate office is necessary for business success. Case also presents how corporate entrepreneur is necessary for growth and success of business unit.

Mr. Payne has been too optimistic in predicting the price of the new technology in the early stage of MEMS technology which made company took long to be profitable. Mr. Weigold was not sure about the potential of the product. On the other hand, the facility in Wilmington was also nearing full capacity, which resulted in everyone fighting for any resources available.
