A Proposal to decrease the cost of Malaria medication in Africa.

Introduction: Malaria is a disease that killed an estimated 660,000 people in 2010. There were an estimated 213 million cases of malaria in 2010. Most of the deaths were children under 5 in Africa. Malaria is a treatable and preventable disease. Our purpose as a charity is to lower the cost of medication in Africa and 3rd world nations by finding cheaper manufacturing processes and ways to cut down cost of the medication.

Statement of Purpose: The places were malaria is most fatal are also where most of the deaths occur. The cheapest most ineffective treatments for malaria quinine, chloroquine and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) usually cost 12 cents in Africa. While the newer more effective Artemisinin combinations can cost between 5.40-12 per a pill. This cost is a huge cost to African families who have little or no disposable income after food and necessities are bought. It would cost the same as 62 days’ worth of food for the average household. These cost lead to more people choosing the cheaper medicine which is less effective and leads to preventable deaths. Our goal as a nonprofit is to research processes to make the cost of Artemisinin go down and become affordable for the average person in Africa. With your funding we will work on finding new processes to create Artemisinin combinations and we will look at ways to optimize the current processes in creating Artemisinin combinations.

Objective: With your grant I plan to decrease the cost of Artemisinin medicine. I will accomplish the following goals.

1. Research new methods for creating the compounds used in Artemisinin combinations.

2. Research and develop ways to make the manufacturing process more efficient and cheaper.

3. Create manufacturing in Africa to build infrastructure and reduce the shipping costs of the medication.
