The war in Europe hurt American trade because the participants wanted to embargo all trade to their enemies. Trade from America to Europe had to go by sea. The trade passed by Britain, the main enemy of Napoleon, who had the largest navy. Napoleon used other European countries to place a trade embargo on Britain so Britain did the same, this hurt trade to and from America. This especially happened when America declared war on Britain.
