Counseling Interracial Couples and Families

Abstract

This paper will examine the relevance of counseling interracial couples. Research will equip its reader to be knowledgeable of counseling to continually develop multicultural competencies in order to effectively work with clients from diverse backgrounds like interracial couples. This research will take a close look at the history, statistics, conflicts, racisms and stereotypes that surrounding interracial couples. Research explains that Black-White couples experience harsh encounters from humanity in addition to being stigmatized by both African-American and White individuals.  The multicultural expectations of our society judge relational mixing of individuals from different racial backgrounds. Referencing America’s antiquity of segregation and discrimination against minority groups, interracial couples have been looked upon negativity. Research will focus the information surrounding the relevance of what information needs to be known when counseling interracial couples and families will also be discussed in this paper. The evidence illustrated will examine a case study of a well-known interracial couples and will provide supporting evidence to strengthen the hypothesis of this research paper. Evidence provided will support ideas as to why learning multicultural-competent counseling is a skill necessary to engage a diverse clientele that are interracial.

Multicultural Competencies

Counselors , therapist, psychologist, spend years in studying and learning all aspects of the field of psychology to be prepared to handle any type of counseling situation that comes their way.
