1. Waves can transfer energy over distance without moving matter the entire distance.

2. The difference of Mechanical wave from Electromagnetic wave. Mechanical waves are either longitudinal or compression waves and require a medium, while Electromagnetic waves are always longitudinal and do not require a known medium.

3. Transverse wave if the vibrations of the particles of the medium conveying a wave are perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave, while Longitudinal wave if the vibration of the particles of the medium conveying a wave are to and front parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave.

4. Formula for getting the speed is v=fλ

v = speed of the wave

f = frequency

λ= wavelength

Sample problem:

When a particular string is vibrated at a frequency of 10 Hz, a transverse wave of wavelength 0.25 m is produced. Determine the speed of the wave as it travels along the string.

v = fλ

v = (10Hz)(0.25)

v = 2.5 m * s-1

5. Reflection is when waves, whether physical or electromagnetic, bounce from a surface back toward the source.

Ex: A mirror reflects the image of the observer

Refraction is when waves, whether physical or electromagnetic, are deflected when the waves go through a substance. The wave generally changes the angle of its general direction.

Ex: Light Refraction through glass and water

Diffraction is when a wave goes through a small hole and has a flared out geometric shadow of the slit. Diffraction is a characteristic of waves of all types. We can hear around a corner because of the diffraction of sound waves.

Ex: Sound waves diffract when pass through a door

Wave interference is the phenomenon that occurs when two waves meet while traveling along the same medium.
