Introduction

The Tata Group is a global enterprise headquartered in India that operates across six continents in more than 100 countries (“TaTa Group,” 2015). Founded in 1868, the TaTa Group has grown to become one of the most respected names in international business. A true conglomerate, the TaTa Group is engaged in innumerable business sectors and services, achieving premier world status in a number of them. “For instance, Tata Communications is the #1 international wholesale voice provider and Tata Motors is among the top ten commercial vehicle manufacturers in the world. Tata Steel is among the top fifteen best steelmakers and TCS is the second largest IT services company in the world by market cap and profit. Tata Global Beverages is the second-largest tea company in the world and Tata Chemicals is the world’s second-largest manufacturer of soda ash” (“TaTa Group,” 2015). Interestingly, the TaTa Group is highly philanthropic with a corporate social commitment that the world could well benefit from it were emulated by all such conglomerates. TaTa Sons is the principal investment holding company of the various TaTa companies and TaTa sons is sixty-six percent held by various trusts that support social improvement in health, science, education, the arts, etc. The TaTa Group’s sustained commitment to corporate responsibility and philanthropic activities was recognized in 2007 with the award to the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy (“TaTa Group,” 2015).
