Titration in the Real World of Chemistry

Gavin Lorenzo

Blanche Ely High School

Abstract

Titration is a very important procedure in the world of chemistry. Titration is a process in which a solution of known concentration is used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution. That is one of its many purposes. To proceed through the process of titration, the titrant (known solution) is added from a buret to a known quantity of the analyte (unknown solution) until the reaction is complete. Knowing the volume of titrant added allows the determination of the concentration of the unknown. Although commonly overlooked at, titration is used in hundreds of different ways and in different industries. Titration is used in the medical field (mainly pharmacy), food industry, science and education industry, aquatic testing (aquariums), as well as the production of biodiesel. All of these are a part of different fields of chemistry that involve titration as chemistry is a broad and open field of science.

What is Titration?

Not too many people are familiar with the world of chemistry. People think chemistry is about mixing chemicals, and making stuff blow up. Well im here to tell you that they are wrong. Chemistry has one of the biggest impacts on our lives today. Chemistry is used in just about every single way, you can’t imagine. We practically do chemistry every single day whether it be with people or just the things we do and use in our everyday lives. The world of chemistry is huge, and there’s hundreds of things you have to learn to become a chemist or just be good at chemistry like a student. Theres hundreds of fields of chemistry that all involve different techniques and purposes. One unknown but common technique of the chemistry industry is titration.

Look at the word closely. You may not have any clue what is means and you may not even know how it affects our lives. Titration is a process in which a solution of...
