Introduction

It is evident that social media plays a significant role in the lives of adolescents. According to a study conducted by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (2011) around 60% of 13-17year olds have at least one profile on a social media site and spend approximately 2 hours per day on these sites. On one hand social media could present opportunities to adolescence. These possible benefits may include staying connected with friends, developing and expressing your individual identity, political views and musical or art work interests. On the other hand, social media also has a few related risks such as cyber bullying, premature exposure to sexual intricacies, reduced time for physical activity and studies.

Positive effects

In an academic world, social media can be used by students and educators as a tool of sharing relevant and helpful information concerning studies. Some students feel confident when writing than speaking therefore social media gives them access to receive and share information. Strong and lasting relationships can be built in a professional manner and that can serve as a way to market or advertise individuals.

Negative effects

In most cases social media is time consuming and can affect the scientific and professional writing skills in a negative manner, since informal language is widely used. Young people get the exposure to cyberbullying and peer pressure which can influence them psychologically.

Social media refers to different number of websites and applications that permit users to produce and share information or communicate with people who have similar interests. (*).
