Assignment: Muscular System
Part 1. Distinguish between the terms. Provide enough information to make a clear distinction between the two related terms given. You need to explain the condition in both.
1. Voluntary muscle vs. involuntary muscle
Voluntary muscle: muscle whose action is normally controlled by an individual's will; mainly skeletal muscle, composed of parallel bundles of striated, multinucleate fibers
Involuntary: a muscle that contracts without conscious control and found in walls of internal organs such as stomach and intestine and bladder and blood vessels.
2. Flexor vs. extensor
Flexor: A muscle whose contraction bends a limb or other part of the body. Decreases the angle of a joint. Found in the arm, hand, leg, or foot. Anterior side of body in anatomical position
Extensor: A muscle whose contraction extends or straightens a limb or other part of the body. Increase the angle of a joint. Found in the arm, hand, leg, or foot. Posterior side in anatomical position.
3. Actin vs. myosin
Actin: makes up of thin filament, myosin binds to actin in order for contraction to occur. Found in A and I bands.
Myosin: makes up thick filament, when relaxed it is found in the H zone. Its also found in the M line and the A band
4. Skeletal muscle histology vs. cardiac muscle histology
Skeletal muscle histology: the cell is very long, is multinucleated, have striations, and have organized strands.
Cardiac muscle histology: The strands are unorganized, there are one to two nucleus present, have striations, and they have intercalated discs.
Part 2. Label the diagrams. Label the diagrams with the correct muscle names. Some muscles may be repeated between the pictures.
