I never thought of myself as a political person because I never truly understood politics. When I thought of politics I think of the presidential election between Senator Obama and Senator Mccain. Our professional nursing text goes on to define politics as“ neither good nor bad. It is the outcome of the political process that may be judged as positive or negative.” (Chitty and Black, 2007, p. 394). Coincidently, before this assignment was due, my wife and I went through a political action experience at the community level with the Department of Education (DOE). I did not have a political public life until I had the need to go through the process of filing a complaint with the district superintendent against Aliamanu Middle School. I have learned that going through the chain of command in the school system can be frustrating. The complaint was that our daughter was being bullied and harassed in school and the principal and counselor did not address these behaviors when it was first reported. As a result, our daughter with no record of previous violent behavior has now suffered two suspensions totaling nine days in one month. Our daughter reacted twice to a minimum total of nine harassment/bullying incidences against her. It was a long and enduring process for myself and my family and it took extreme measures to be heard.
Under the Hawaii Administrative Rules Title 8 Department of Education, Chapter 19 (HARDOE Chapter 19) (2008):
Harassment means a person acts with intent to harass, bully, annoy or alarm if he or she: (2) insults, taunts, or challenges another person in a manner to provoke a violent response, (4) name calls, make rude gestures, insults or constantly teases another person who feels humiliated, intimidated, threatened and/or embarrassed (p. 13).
