EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION
HEALTH EFFECTS
• Difficulty in breathing
• Wheezing
• Coughing
• Asthma
• Worsening of existing respiratory
• Cardiac conditions
These effects can result:
• Increased medication use
• Increased doctor or emergency room visits
• More hospital admissions
• Premature death
It estimated that some 7 million premature deaths may be attributed to air pollution. India has the highest death rate due to air pollution. December 2013, estimated 500,000 people in China died each year – correlation between pneumonia-related deaths and air pollution from vehicles.
European Union – causes death include strokes, heart disease, COPD, lung cancer, and lung infection.
Lung Disease and Cancer
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(COPD)
- includes diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Research has demonstrated increase risk of developing asthma and COPD from increased exposure to traffic-related air pollution.
• Air pollution is also a significant contribution to environmental toxins in pregnancy.
• The World Health Organization reports the greatest concentrations of particulates are found in countries with low economic world power and high poverty and population growth rates.
• Example countries include Egypt, Sudan, Mongolia, and Indonesia.
Effects on Animals
The forage crops are sometimes contained with metallic pollutants, such as, lead, arsenic and molybdenum in mining and thermal power plants area due to air pollution. The domestic animals feeding on contaminated fodder suffer from different diseases. Air contaminated with ozone causes pulmonary changes, oedema and haemorrhage in dogs, cats, and rabbits.
Effects on Plants
Plants are affected by various air pollutants. Excessive sulphur dioxides make the cells inactive and finally are killed. At lower concentrations, brownish red colour of leaf, choruses and necrosis take place. Tomato is affected by ammonia and radish, cucumber...
