Prevention

In the case of the elderly population today in the United States, I believe that primary and secondary prevention would be applicable to many of their problems. By learning about the different organizations in the communities earlier in their lives, they will have a better understanding of who or what can help them when they need it. That is the first step, or primary prevention. Secondary prevention would be used at the first sign of a problem. The elderly would look into any programs that may help, by either word of mouth or a referral service. According to the Sun-Sentinel (sun-sentinel.com), there are numerous programs within the South Florida area, catering to all types of needs.

One solution I can suggest is to offer a class on the many areas of human services that can benefit the “baby boomers” or people born between 1946 and 1964 (AARP.org). This primary prevention strategy will allow them to learn about their options before they become necessary and give them time to figure out which ones work best for them. This class would ideally be full of local programs and services in the community that can cater to their needs.

We want them to become aware of help options before they need to utilize them, and I think that a general information class would be a great way to spread the word about the human services in the community. One benefit I see to this class is that we do not know if a person who attends the class knows someone who is in need of a specific type of service, but has no idea where to start to look. This person would be able to pass the information learned in this class about any and all programs that another individual may need at the time.
