INTRODUCTION

Context of the problem

Every year the statistics reveal that more high school students are dropping out of school at an alarming rate. There are many factors that contribute to the high school dropout rate such as: teen pregnancy, substance abuse and socio-economic standards, peer pressure and familial factors. Three-quarters of state prison inmates are high school drop outs, 90% of the 11,000 youth in adult detention facilities have no more than a ninth grade education. In 2010 only 55% of young adult dropouts were employed, compared with 74% of high school graduates and 87% of four-year college graduates. Dropouts cost our nation more than $260 billion dollars in lost wages, lost taxes, and lost productivity over their lifetimes. As the percentages of dropouts increase, the solution to this problem is the united effort of our government agencies, church and local school systems.

An estimated one-third of our nations high school age children have officially dropped out of school. Intervention programs have had a tremendous affect on preventing the high school dropout rate from increasing. There has been many factors that have contributed to students contemplating dropping out and actually dropping out of high school such as: poor academic achievement, familial conditions, gangs, substance abuse, pregnancy and more. On a national level, the percentage has decreased since their have been campaigns on a local level to prevent students from dropping out or returning back to school through intervention programs. These programs have helped to lower the dropout rate by 20%. Funding and special intervention programs provide services from counseling, mentoring and remedial academic support. The response to the nations need to help eliminate and eradicate the thought of dropping out has been phenomenal.
