Case Analysis of the Minicase

Companies that have international interests must have the right people in the proper positions. A person who is wrong for the job can create difficulties for the company that may never be overcome. At the least, a wrong decision about placement of people can cause a delay in reaching the goals set by the business. It can cause mistrust, hinder the company’s relationship with the foreign company, and the foreign market.

Problem Statement

The problem faced in the minicase is the decision on who is the best candidate for the job in China. The job would require the candidate to staff, and run the new branch of an industrial products business. The candidate would remain in the position for three years before they would transfer the position to a local applicant. They would have to train and develop the local candidate for the responsibility of running the Chinese branch. The company has narrowed the field of applicants to three. The three contenders that remain for the position all have good credentials. They are all educated, and have proven themselves to the company. They each possess qualities that could help them, and the company.

Analysis of Relevant Information

The first candidate is Tom. He is single, and has an M.B.A. He is active in the local Council of Foreign Relations. He has received outstanding performance reviews, and wants to advance his career by working in an international environment. He has been out of school for twenty years, and is an active person who is settled in life. And, he has a financial background.

The second candidate is Firdaus. Firdaus is a deputy V.P. in human resources. She is originally from Yemen, but has lived in the United States since she was in grade school. She is married with two children. She has a Ph.D. in engineering, but transitioned to human...
