Mars One

The planet Mars, often called the Red Planet, has always been considered one of the most interesting planets in the solar system. The exploration of Mars has been a goal of space programs for many years but was never considered a reality until recently. A lot of time and research has been done on the possibility of sustaining human life on Mars. This research has proven that it is possible for humans to survive on the planet Mars, and several scientists have taken steps to make this a reality.

Mission and Finances:

The Mars One mission was created to establish a permanent human settlement on the planet of Mars (Mars One, 2015). Mars One is the non-profit foundation that was established to secure sponsors and donors to help raise the funds needed to achieve their mission of humans living on Mars. In addition to the non-profit foundation, the Mars One Corporation was also established. This company is a for-profit organization that was set up to accept investments from the private sector. Each investor will be allowed to buy shares of the company with the ultimate goal of receiving a large return on their investment if this mission is successful (Mars One, 2015). At this time, the biggest problem with the project is funding. The estimated cost to land the first four astronauts on Mars is six billion dollars. It is estimated that the subsequent crews of four will cost around four billion dollars each (Wall, 2015).

Candidates:

A rigorous selection process has been established to select the final twenty-four people that will make the journey to Mars. At the beginning of the process, there were over two hundred thousand applicants. Through a careful screening process, this number is now down to one hundred candidates. (Cruddas, 2015).
