Not only entertainment: Music affect Intelligence

Nowadays, music has penetrated into every corner of most people's lives in a variety of forms. It is used as a background element for the movies, shopping places, and video games or is purely presented in concert with instruments. Music is a popular form of entertainment and way for listener to relax; however, is music just a form of entertainment, or does it have actual effects on human brains? What is easy to notice is that music can influence people's moods; for example, rock music tends to make listener happy, and the blues make listener sad. However, this essay focuses on the unnoticeable influences of music on human intelligence. Researches on Canadian adolescent during the last ten years will be analyzed to discuss the existence of a positive relationship between musical stimulus and human intelligence level. A bunch of psychological studies already proved that music stimulus could improve a variety of cognitive abilities like spatial reasoning, memory capacity, and language skills (Bergland, 2013). The most surprising point is the related improvement in high school students’ academic achievement. All the results have shown that music is not only entertainment but also benefits adolescents’ brain activities. Listening to music will improve young listeners’ intelligence level on solving a variety of cognitive problems. The positive correlation between the music stimulus and the intelligence level would provide people a scientific way to enjoy the music with some benefits, especially on the education field. Most children can improve academic performance like mathematics and other cognitive abilities by listening to music.
