While reviewing some time cards from one of the Sandwich Blitz locations, Lei Lee came across a discrepancy in one of the time cards. Upon investigation, Lei discovers that the location manager has allowed an employee to record time not yet worked, thus earning pay for the recorded time. As Lei researched the issue further, she also discovers that this practice along with many of the other expectations that the employees are evaluated on, are not covered in the company handbook. This situation provides Dalman and Lei the opportunity to review, and specify their goals and expectations of the company, and correct any deficiencies that have been reported. To achieve this goal, Dalman and Lei will need to implement a control system, and follow the four step control process to successfully implement the chosen control system or systems.

A control system will allow Dalman and Lei to establish the standards, monitor performance, and make corrections to any problems that are identified. There are four steps to the control system process; setting performance standards, measuring performance, compare performance against the standards, and take action to correct problems and reinforce success. By following these steps Dalman and Lei will ensure the success of their company and improve the performance of their employees.

In order for Dalman and Lei to effectively apply and enforce the four step control process they will have to begin by updating the employee handbook. The employee handbook is the medium that Dalman and Lei will convey their expectations for conduct and the standards in which their employees will perform. As a guideline, Dalman and Lei should evaluate the current handbook and determine what worked and did not work, and decide upon what new standards they want to implement. By accomplishing this crucial step they would now have set the standard where all future infractions could be measured against.
